450x232mm 270gsm Recycled card, hand numbered and signed in pencil.

Edition of 70 - Sold Unframed

Composed in the spirit of a play bill poster, with the artists own poetic-celebration of the artful-steps in skilfully luring a trout from the depths on a fly. When followed, success is guaranteed (kind-of)!

Background: In 1998, I joined the NZ Professional Fly Fishing Guides Association (NZPFGA), working as a guide for several years on the rivers of the Buller River Catchment, within the mountainous upper South Island of NZ, where I grew up.

Lodges I have worked for include, the once infamous Lake Rotoroa Lodge, and the now legendary Owen River Lodge - NZ Tourism Award winner 2018.

Proudly produced in collaboration with Farlows since 1840, Pall Mall, London. This work is hand-printed with very rare antique trout fishing printing blocks (Victorian and Edwardian) held in the Hooksmith Press collection.

A rare 1880’s dry fly, sourced from one of New Zealand’s oldest tackle shops, takes pride of place. Further research revealed this pictorial block, demonstrating a ‘Jam Knot’ in an 1888 Hardy’s Catalogue - one of the most famous brands in the game. Other pictorial blocks include an old split-cane rod and a lovely Allcocks Reel. The trout image is thought to come from the tackle manufacturer Alex Martin of Scotland. Incidentally if you’re reading this and have any fishing blocks you’d like to sell, please do get in touch!

Once upon a time when I was younger than I am now - pre go-pro cameras, drones and instagram (circa 1999).

A lovely fishing video me and my brother Dan made one boxing day half an hour from home!
